my story.....

Growing up on a twenty-five-acre farm in the countryside of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Pamela Poe spent her 1950s childhood exploring the surrounding hills and fields. The only child of Marguerita Jane Poe and Lloyd Lindsey Dent, she spent a lot of time alone on their tree- and water-rich property when not by her father’s side. Much of her writing reflects the connection that grew during those days between her and the natural world.

Pamela began writing creative prose in high school but never aspired to be a writer. She excelled in foreign languages and thought one day she would be an interpreter for the government. But then, after two years of college, wanderlust took hold of her attention. She pursued multiple career paths that took her away from home—photographer, tree planter, startup engineer and assistant unit operator at nuclear plants, farmer, and caregiver. In 1991, Pamela found her passion in massage therapy and has now spent thirty-two years as a teacher and practitioner of bodywork. She sprinkled all the paths she walked into stories she wrote in her journal about her life experiences. Those stories would become the body of her work as an author. Pam often writes about the transformative experiences that have shaped who she is and the life she now lives.  â€‹

She decided to finish her B.A. degree in 2001 and concentrate her studies on complimentary healthcare. However, that plan mysteriously mutated into one and half years of exploring the roots of her religious upbringing, including devoting the last semester to begin a memoir of the journey through her mother’s dementia. While in school and caring for her mother, Pamela also completed a three-year training course, “Theology Among the People.” It prepared her to become a lay minister for the United Church of Christ.

Pamela signed with Berry Powell Publishing in early 2022. What I See Now: The Reckoning of An Old White Woman, a reflective look at racism and her upbringing in the segregated South, will be published in the Fall of 2024.

Having spent time at Esalen in Big Sur, California, Colorado, Kansas and Vermont Pamela currently lives in the southeastern U.S. with her two dogs, Maggie, and Gertie, in the gentle family farmhouse where she grew up.

Future books by Pamela will include her memoir, Threadbare: The Unraveling of Two Lives, a reflection on how the journey through her mother's dementia transformed her own life;  and Redefining Fundamentalism: A Pilgrim’s Journey Home, a critical exploration of her fundamentalist background.
